Apple unveils plans to go greener
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc., responding to criticism from environmental groups, unveiled plans on Wednesday that Chief Executive
Steve Jobs claimed would make the company greener than most of its competitors.
In a message titled, “A Greener Apple,” posted on the company’s Web site, Jobs gave details for the first time of what the company was doing to remove toxic chemicals from its new products and more aggressively recycle old products.

Promise, perils of wind power described
WASHINGTON - Wind farms could generate as much as 7 percent of U.S. electricity in 15 years, but policymakers need to better consider the overall impacts, such as the threat spinning blades pose to birds and bats, a panel of the National Research Council reported Thursday.
The towers appear most dangerous to night-migrating songbirds, bats and some hunting birds, but not enough about the risks is known to draw conclusions, the experts said in a study requested by Congress.
Panel chairman Paul Risser, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, urged states and local governments to use the report as a guideline for an “alignment of impacts” that they weigh when assessing whether and where to site wind farms.

Scientists protest Bush stance on species
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - More than three dozen scientists have signed a letter to protest a new Bush administration interpretation of the Endangered Species Act, saying it jeopardizes animals such as wolves and grizzly bears.
The new reading of the law proposed by Interior Department Solicitor David Bernhardt would enable the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect animals and plants only where they are battling for survival. The agency wouldn’t have to protect them where they’re in good shape.
The proposed changes would “have real and profoundly detrimental impacts on the conservation of many species and the habitat upon which they depend,” said the letter, signed by 38 prominent wildlife biologists and environmental ethics specialists.

Bangkok faces flooded future, expert says
By Gillian Griffith-Jones
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, will be under water in 20 years because of rising seas from global warming and subsidence, says a top Thai climate expert who warned of a tsunami years before the 2004 disaster.
“If nothing is done, Bangkok will be at least 50 centimeters to one meter under water,” Smith Dharmasaroja, head of Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Centre, said in an interview.
Bangkok, a sprawling city of more than 10 million people and criss-crossed by more than 1,000 canals, is between 1 and 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) above sea level and is sinking into its soft, loamy soil at an alarming rate, he said this week.
Smith, giving his scenario for Bangkok in 2025, is renowned in Thailand for controversial predictions.

U.S., China seek to water down climate report
BANGKOK, Thailand - The United States and China want to water down a key climate change report, arguing that quick action to reduce greenhouse gases will be more costly and less effective than the scientists who wrote the report claim, according to documents reviewed Monday by The Associated Press.
The comments, submitted by the two governments ahead of this week’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meeting, also downplay the potential benefits of reducing emissions and take aim at the report’s conclusion that quick action could stabilize greenhouse gas levels, limiting the temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
The comments are a precursor to what delegates expect will be a fight for much of the week to preserve the key conclusions in the draft IPCC report, which says greenhouse gas emissions can be quickly cut below current levels if the world shifts away from fuels like coal, invests in energy efficiency and reforms the agriculture sector.

Can California’s largest lake be saved?
SALTON SEA, Calif. - The Salton Sea is an incongruous sight: a huge body of water in the middle of a desert.
And with good reason. California’s largest lake was created purely by accident in 1905 when floodwaters from the Colorado River burst past a series of dams and settled in a naturally salty depression more than 228 feet below sea level.
Ever since, the lake has been a Southern California oasis, rich in wildlife.

Officials: Climate change harms security
By MATT CRENSON, AP National Writer
NEW YORK - Growing concern surrounds a new national security threat, an insidious trend that could foster terrorism worldwide and draw our armed forces into messy regional conflicts in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
No, it isn’t nuclear proliferation. Nor is it a new brand of religious fundamentalism.
It’s global warming.
In the last few weeks, several groups — including the U.S. Congress, a panel of retired top-ranking military officers and the
U.N. Security Council — have considered the possibility that global warming may be a significant threat to peace and security in coming decades.
“Climate change can act as a threat multiplier for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world,” the former military leaders warned in a report released this month by the CNA Corporation, a nonprofit research consultant to the federal government. “The increasing risks from climate change should be addressed now because they will almost certainly get worse if we delay.”

Road trip to South Pole raises concern
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A planned driving trip to Antarctica’s South Pole along the ice road built by the United States has sparked concern about growing commercialization of the frozen continent, where visitor numbers could hit 50,000 this year.
A group describing itself as “San Francisco Bay area professionals who use long range driving expeditions to promote cross-border understanding and goodwill,” has announced a “Zero South” drive from the Antarctic coast to the pole in the coming Southern Hemisphere summer.
The ice road to the South Pole was built by U.S. contractors between 2001-2004 to enable the National Science Foundation to supply its science base at the pole using crawler tractors and sleds, cutting back cargo airplane flights.

Endangered crocodile set up on blind dates
MSNBC News Services
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - An endangered male crocodile will be spoiled for choice when he gets ready to mate.
Jantan will be set up with four female crocodiles of the same species to hopefully produce offspring at a breeding center in Selangor state, Zainal Zahari, a veterinarian in the country’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks, said Wednesday.
“He has got the right stamina and the right aggression,” Zainal said of the 15-foot-long and 1,000-pound reptile known as a false gharial crocodile. “So we are very hopeful.”
